Job description
Unlocking Environmental Justice: Bridging the Gap between Law and Implementation
Overview: Kenya boasts a range of laws empowering citizens to address the impact of various projects on their lives and environments. However, a persistent gap between legislation and its execution often results in adverse effects on local communities. To address this disparity, we are in search of a dedicated Community Environmental Legal Officer (CELO) to collaborate with communities grappling with environmental issues, guiding them through governmental administrative processes for effective solutions.
Responsibilities:
- Project Implementation: Manage and implement Natural Justice projects in Kwale and Mombasa, Coastal Regions.
- Research and Advocacy: Engage in constitutional and environmental policy research, advocating for communities affected by climate change and large-scale projects.
- Legal Advice: Provide high-quality paralegal advice and support to communities, empowering them legally.
- Community Collaboration: Work closely with community members, environmental defenders, and local civil society groups.
- Government Liaison: Facilitate discussions with relevant government institutions and contribute to legal submissions.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Law, Environmental Sciences, Human Rights, International Relations, or related field.
- 4 years of relevant work experience in law, capacity development, coalition building, or public interest.
- Knowledge of Kenya’s constitutional and administrative law, human rights, land, and environmental law.
- Proficiency in English and Kiswahili.
- Commitment to advancing the rights of marginalized communities.
