Job Description

Job Title: Firefighter Trainee
Reports To: Airport Fire Officer / Station Officer
Location: Any KAA–managed airport
Job Purpose
To undergo structured training and supervised practice in airport fire and rescue operations, in order to acquire the skills, fitness and discipline required to respond effectively to aircraft and structural emergencies and support safe airport operations.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
Training & Development

Take part in both classroom and practical training on aviation firefighting, rescue methods, operation of firefighting tools and airport emergency procedures.
Understand and follow ICAO standards and Kenya Airports Authority fire and safety rules.
Regularly engage in physical drills and emergency simulations to maintain high operational readiness.

Emergency Response (Under Supervision)

  • Support senior firefighters during aircraft incidents, building fires, fuel spills and other emergencies within the airport.
  • Assist in rescuing passengers and staff, including giving basic first aid and handling casualties.
  • Help operate fire engines, pumps, hoses, breathing apparatus and other rescue tools safely and correctly.

Fire Prevention & Safety

  • Take part in routine fire risk inspections around airport facilities and report any hazards noticed.
  • Join in fire drills, evacuation exercises and safety sensitization for airport staff and other users.
  • Assist in checking and doing basic upkeep of fire extinguishers, hydrants, alarms and related fire protection systems.

Equipment & Station Maintenance
>Clean and inspect firefighting equipment, personal protective gear and vehicles after operations to ensure they are ready for the next call.
>Help keep the fire station clean, orderly and in a constant state of preparedness.

Reporting & Conduct
>Assist in recording incidents, drills, equipment checks and daily station activities as instructed.
>Adhere to KAA’s code of conduct, safety rules, standard operating procedures and the established chain of command.

Minimum Requirements
>KCSE mean grade C (plain) or equivalent, with at least C– in English and Mathematics.
>Age between 18 and 30 years at the time of application.
>Physically and medically fit, meeting aerodrome firefighter fitness standards, with good sight, hearing and ability to work in heat, heights and confined spaces.
>No criminal record, with proven good character and discipline.
>Ready to work in shifts (nights, weekends, public holidays) and accept posting to any KAA station.
>Ability to swim is an added advantage.
