Job Description

Main role/responsibilities

The MD & CEO is essentially responsible for the overall leadership and performance of KenGen, including:

  • Providing strategic leadership and direction to the company.
  • Implementing the company’s strategic plan and business objectives.
  • Overseeing KenGen’s electricity generation operations and investments.
  • Ensuring sustainable growth and financial performance.
  • Leading development of renewable-energy projects, particularly geothermal.
  • Managing relationships with the Board of Directors, government, regulators, investors and other stakeholders.
  • Ensuring effective corporate governance and compliance.
  • Overseeing financial, operational and human-resource performance.
  • Representing KenGen at national and international level.
  • Building partnerships and identifying new business and investment opportunities.

Expected qualifications/experience

For a position at this level, the key requirements in the advert/job specifications centre on:

  • A university degree from a recognized institution.
  • A Master’s degree or equivalent postgraduate qualification is highly desirable/required under the detailed specifications.
  • Extensive senior management/executive experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic leadership and management of a large organization.
  • Strong understanding of the energy/electricity generation sector, particularly renewable energy, is important.
  • Demonstrated ability in financial and business management.
  • Strong corporate-governance knowledge.
  • Experience working with a Board of Directors and senior stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership, communication, negotiation and decision-making skills.
  • Professional qualifications/membership in a relevant professional body may be required.
  • Knowledge of the Kenyan energy sector and relevant regulatory environment is an advantage.
