Job Summary: Under the general supervision of a Corporal or other departmental supervisor, performs law enforcement and public safety work in the protection of life and property, and the execution of orders issued through the jurisdiction of the Sheriff. Performs varied assignments in custody and security of Jail inmates. Serves civil papers. Executes arrest warrants. Attends court during civil and criminal proceedings. Serves writs in criminal proceedings. Assists in Public Safety Education Programs. Observes inmate behavior and activity. Makes counts of inmates. Reports unusual or irregular incidents to the supervisor on a timely basis. Maintains discipline and order. Enforces institutional rules. Intercedes in disputes between inmates. Assists in shakedown of inmate living quarters. Prevents escapes, assaults, suicides, and injuries. Supervises and participates in the maintenance of order in and around courtrooms. Directs interested parties to the proper courtroom. Collects fees, records bonds, and maintains records. Attends, directs, and conducts juries. Serves various legal papers. Transports prisoners to and from jails and hospitals and the court. Performs directly related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED supplemented by three (3) years work experience involving public contact, and two (2) years of uninterrupted service in the position of Deputy Sheriff; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Must be able to respond to call-outs with the county in thirty (30) minutes. Must undergo physical, psychological, psychometric and background testing. Must possess valid GA driver’s license and current certificates in First Aid, CPR and firearms. Must possess a GA Peace Officers Standard Training Certificate.

Note: During emergencies and disasters affecting Chatham County, you may be required to report to work as part of a disaster operations team.
