Job Description
Location: Kigoma or Tabora, Western Tanzania

Role Overview
The Forest and Land Conservation Manager leads strategic and operational efforts to conserve terrestrial habitats and wildlife corridors in the Malagarasi–Moyowosi landscape of Western Tanzania. The role integrates science, policy, and field implementation to strengthen protected areas, restore degraded forests, and enhance ecological connectivity through participatory and legally grounded processes.
Key Responsibilities

Lead spatial planning and corridor conservation aligned with 2030 basin targets.

Support legal establishment and strengthening of protected areas (WMAs, VLFRs, Local Nature Reserves).

Oversee forest landscape restoration (ANR, FMNR, enrichment planting, fire and invasive species management).

Manage GIS, remote sensing, and monitoring systems.

Improve protected area management effectiveness (SMART patrols, ecological monitoring, HWC mitigation).

Develop conservation agreements and performance-based incentives with communities.

Coordinate participatory land-use planning (VLUPs) and governance strengthening (WMA AAs, VNRCs).

Supervise staff and manage budgets, grants, compliance, and donor reporting.

Represent TNC in stakeholder forums and support fundraising and policy engagement.
Required Qualifications
-
Bachelor’s degree in forestry, conservation, ecology, or related field.
-
7+ years’ experience in land/forest conservation in Tanzania or East Africa.

Experience with participatory land-use planning, WMAs/VLFRs, restoration, GIS, and monitoring tools.

Strong partnership, program management, negotiation, and supervisory skills.

Fluent in Kiswahili and proficient in English.

Willingness to travel frequently to remote sites.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Advanced degree and 10+ years’ experience.

Knowledge of Tanzanian land, wildlife, and forest policies.
-
Strong GIS/data management skills.
-
Established networks in Western Tanzania and familiarity with Malagarasi–Moyowosi ecosystem.

TSH 12,000,000–150,000,000 per annum
