Job Description

Position Summary
IITA is looking for an intern for a 3 month period (renewable depending on performance and
funding availability) to support its data science team. Successful candidates will support
building a global, public and collaborative data management workflow: Carob. The
internship is particularly suitable for candidates interested in data science applications in the
field of agriculture. Candidates are expected to;
• be recent graduates or graduated not more than one year ago
• have intermediate knowledge in R programming and understanding of agricultural
sciences, as this position will combine different disciplines including software
development, data science, social sciences, soil science and agronomy.
Example duties include:
• Identification of relevant agricultural datasets in public data repositories (Dataverse,Zenodo, CKAN, etc.).
• Data exploration and associated documentation (technical reports, scientific articles) to understand datasets and their contents.
• Developing R scripts to process and standardize data to the carob standard.
• Using software development tools like Git and GitHub to collaborate with other data scientists across the globe.
• Developing and exploring data to generate analysis and modelling of agricultural processes.
• Maintain good coding practices and documentation of code.
Preferred Qualifications & Experience
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Information Technology with experience in agriculture or other natural science; or a degree in
Agricultural Sciences with strong data science experience.
• Intermediate experience with R programming.
• Good communication skills and command of English.
• Excellent team player, and self-motivated and independent problem solver who excels at prioritization and multi-tasking.
