Job Description
Job Purpose (Paraphrased)
The officer in this role reports to the Chief Principal Nursing Officer and is responsible for overseeing and supporting the delivery of nursing services within the hospital.
Duties and Responsibilities (Paraphrased & Condensed)
1. Unit Leadership
>Provide daily updates to the Director of Nursing Services on departmental performance.
>Organize, participate in, and contribute to divisional and inter-departmental meetings.
>Guide nursing staff on accurate documentation and reporting procedures.
>Take part in handling disciplinary matters involving departmental staff.
>Strengthen teamwork and inter-professional collaboration within the department.
>Coordinate and conduct regular clinical and nursing rounds.
2. Patient Satisfaction & Quality Care
>Plan, organize, and oversee nursing services using established nursing processes and models.
>Lead the implementation of patient service delivery charters.
>Support unit heads in day-to-day patient care and operational management.
>Promote a respectful, dignified and supportive care environment for patients, families, and nursing staff.
>Monitor and evaluate patient care outcomes to improve service quality.
>Champion evidence-based nursing practices to enhance patient-centred care.
>Promote occupational health and safety initiatives for a safe care environment.
>Coordinate regular customer service audits within the department.
>Advocate for timely clinical interventions and safe delivery of care.
3. Operational Efficiency
>Oversee and rationalize nursing staffing to ensure effective 24-hour service coverage.
>Implement nursing-related programs and departmental projects.
>Set performance targets for unit heads and lead mid-year and annual appraisals.
>Enforce adherence to infection prevention and control standards.
>Serve on departmental committees such as credit and disciplinary committees.
>Ensure nursing equipment and supplies are functional and available.
>Conduct bi-annual clinical audits and ensure corrective actions are taken.
>Perform quarterly audits on compliance with the service charter.
>Monitor the proper use of equipment, supplies, medicines, and controlled drugs through regular checks.
>Contribute to revenue generation efforts and assist with departmental budgeting.
Qualifications and Experience (Paraphrased)
>Master’s degree in Midwifery, Medical–Surgical Nursing, Pediatric Nursing, Critical Care, Oncology and >Palliative Care, Forensic Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Nursing Education, Nursing Management, Geriatric Nursing, or another relevant field.
>Bachelor of Science in Nursing or equivalent qualification.
>Valid registration and practicing license from the Nursing Council of Kenya.
>Completion of a recognized leadership or management course lasting at least four weeks.
>Minimum of eight years relevant experience, including at least three years in a supervisory role.
