Job Description
Key Responsibilities
The role encompasses a dual mandate in high-level legal practice and knowledge development:
I. Legal Practice & Client Advisory
- Effectively manage client relationships, conduct meetings, and oversee all aspects of client transactions and matters from initiation to conclusion.
- Manage Litigation files, including preparing quality legal pleadings, representing clients in court (as both plaintiffs and defendants), and managing all phases of the judicial process.
- Lead negotiations to settle potentially litigious matters and effectively employ Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) methods, including Arbitration.
- Draft, review, amend, and negotiate complex commercial contracts and documentation, ensuring their due execution and compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Provide sound legal advice and draft authoritative legal opinions across all practice areas.
- Handle high-level Conveyancing processes, including property due diligence, drafting lease agreements, and overseeing matters before the Lands Registry, Survey of Kenya, and National Lands Commission.
II Knowledge Sharing
- Design, develop, and deliver structured training programmes, interactive workshops, masterclasses, and legal seminars covering the core competency areas.
- Design comprehensive and practical training materials, including manuals, workbooks, case studies, precedents, and practical exercises.
Core Competency Areas
- Commercial Law:Â Contract drafting and negotiation, corporate transactions, business structuring, commercial dispute resolution, secured lending, and regulatory compliance.
- Conveyancing Law:Â Land transactions, leases, searches, land registration under the Land Registration Act 2012, stamp duty, and property due diligence under the Kenyan legal framework.
- Litigation Law (Kenyan Law):Â Civil Litigation procedure (including filing of claims, drafting pleadings, discovery, and pre-trial processes), Commercial Litigation, Constitutional and Public Law Disputes, ELC matters, Employment disputes, enforcement of judgments and decrees, Appellate Advocacy, and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).
- Probate & Succession:Â Grant of probate and letters of administration, intestate succession under the Law of Succession Act (Cap 160), estate administration, and beneficiary rights.
Qualifications & Experience
- Must possess an LLB Degree from a recognized university.
- Must be an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a current Practicing Certificate (LSK membership) — Mandatory.
- Minimum 7+ years’ post-admission experience in a similar, multi-specialty role, preferably within a top-tier law firm.
- Demonstrable experience (minimum 5 years) in legal training, lecturing, CPD facilitation, or mentoring. Previous or current university lecturing experience is highly desirable.
- An LLM or postgraduate qualification in a relevant legal specialisation will be a significant advantage.
- Proven hands-on expertise in the interpretation and application of legal texts, statutes, rules, and regulations.
- Working knowledge of conveyancing, court rules, and land registry procedures is essential.
