 Job Description

We are seeking a knowledgeable and experienced Avocado Agronomist to join our team. As an Avocado Agronomist, you will play a crucial role in studying and managing the cultivation of avocado trees. Your expertise and guidance will contribute to the success and productivity of the avocado farms, ensuring optimal growth and yield. This position requires a deep understanding of avocado farming practices, as well as a passion for sustainable agriculture and innovation.

 Main Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and stay updated on the latest advancements in avocado cultivation techniques, pest and disease control, irrigation methods, and post-harvest handling.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance on soil preparation, planting techniques, fertilization, pruning, and other essential aspects of avocado cultivation.
  • Collaborate with the Avocado Production Manager to develop and implement effective pest and disease management strategies, including the use of integrated pest management (IPM) practices.
  • Monitor avocado orchards regularly to assess plant health, identify potential issues, and recommend appropriate remedial actions.
  • Conduct trials and experiments to optimize avocado production, improve fruit quality, and enhance overall farm efficiency.
  • Educate field supervisors on sustainable agricultural practices, water conservation methods, and environmentally friendly approaches to avocado farming.
  • Provide training to farm workers on best practices for avocado cultivation, including proper pruning techniques, irrigation management, and post-harvest handling.
  • Stay informed about market trends, consumer preferences, and industry regulations related to avocados, and provide insights to farmers on market opportunities and challenges.
  • Collect and record data related to pests, diseases, and weed status in a given pivot.
  • Make recommendations based on field status.
  • Communicate any irregular field situation to the Line Manager.
  • Maintaining up-to-date records and reports.

Qualification, Experience, and Knowledge

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Science, or a related field with at least 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Proven experience as an Agronomist, preferably with a focus on avocado cultivation, with knowledge in grafting and nursery management.
  • In-depth knowledge of avocado farming practices, including soil management, planting techniques, irrigation systems, pest and disease control, and post-harvest handling.
  • Familiarity with sustainable agriculture practices and a commitment to environmental stewardship.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and address issues affecting avocado plant health and productivity.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with colleagues, farm workers, and industry stakeholders.
  • Ability to conduct research, analyze data, and apply scientific principles to improve avocado production.
  • Proficiency in using agricultural software, data analysis tools, and other relevant technology.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
