Crop Spray Scout (2 positions)

  • Department: Farm Operations
  • Job Location: Laikipia County
  • Reporting to: Spray Agronomist

 Job Description

The Crop Spray Scout at Mutara Orchards Limited will be responsible for inspecting crops on the farm to check for plant health, diseases, weeds, and pests to help the company make timely and informed decisions. This individual will ensure that top-quality grown products will always be made available to meet our customer’s demands.

 Main Responsibilities

Planning

  • Plan the order of the fields to be monitored according to the developed schedule.

Monitoring and Surveying Pivots

  • Conduct daily or weekly pivot visits to assess crop health.
  • Identify and report on potential pests and diseases.
  • Collect data using photos and on forms.
  • Collect soil samples often and forward them to the Spray Agronomist.
  • Notify security of any crop theft or distraction.
  • Monitor the efficiency of products used for control measures.

Recording and Reporting

  • Collect and record data related to pests, diseases, and weed status in a given pivot.
  • Make recommendations based on field status.
  • Communicate any irregular field situation to the Line Manager.
  • Maintain up-to-date records and reports.

Quality Control

  • Ensure that the plant population is within the required threshold, seed is covered, and planting is within the right condition.
  • Ensure sprayer nozzles are dispensing the desired volumes and there is no blockage.
  • Ensure fertilizers are applied using the right rate & distribution.
  • Ensure there are minimal losses during harvesting.

 Qualification, Experience, and Knowledge

  • Diploma in agriculture.
  • 2-3 years of experience on a large-scale farm.
  • Knowledge of plant health on various vegetables will be advantageous.
  • Result-oriented, quality-oriented individual with a high level of integrity.
  • Able to collaborate with all teams at the farm.
  • Open to change and willing to learn new farming systems.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
