Community Environmental Legal Officer (CELO)

Job description

Introduction: Kenya has a set of laws empowering citizens affected by various projects. However, the gap between law and implementation often results in adverse effects on local communities. To address this, we seek a full-time CELO to assist communities in Lamu County affected by environmental issues and guide them through government administrative processes.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Project Implementation:
    • Manage and implement Natural Justice projects in Lamu County.
    • Conduct constitutional and environmental policy research, advocating for and supporting communities impacted by climate change and large-scale projects.
  2. Legal Support:
    • Provide high-quality legal advice and support to communities and partners.
    • Offer legal assistance to environmental defenders and affected communities.
    • Undertake legal research, draft submissions, and provide opinions on environmental and climate justice issues.
  3. Strategic Collaboration:
    • Contribute to Natural Justice’s overall program and strategy.
    • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with key partners, including communities, government entities, and donors.
    • Collaborate with Natural Justice staff in the East Africa Hub for project implementation.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Law, Environmental Sciences, Human Rights, International Relations, Social Sciences, or related field.
  • Alternatively, 4 years of relevant work experience in legal, capacity development, coalition building, policy, or public interest fields in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Knowledge of Kenya’s constitutional and administrative law, including human rights, land & environmental law.
  • Strong command of spoken and written English and Kiswahili.
  • Computer literacy, understanding of data entry, basic computer skills, and knowledge of databases.
  • Commitment to constitutionalism and environmental justice principles.
