Head of History

Company: Banda School

Location: Kenya

Role Overview: Banda School is seeking a Head of History to inspire students with an exciting range of historical subjects. The school has a unique curriculum that integrates European, International, and African history. The ideal candidate will continue to develop the curriculum, embracing various teaching methods to inspire a love of learning.

Progress and Assessment: The Head of History will work closely with the Deputy Head Academic to monitor academic progress through standardized and non-standardized assessments. Maintaining high standards, the Common Entrance examinations represent the final assessments at Banda School.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the teaching of History throughout the school.
  • Chair regular departmental meetings and supervise History Department teachers.
  • Plan and deliver engaging lessons with variety, pace, and challenge.
  • Promote the subject through assemblies and displays.
  • Use school behavior systems and promote core values and safeguarding.
  • Foster effective relationships with pupils, colleagues, and parents.
  • Plan, implement, and monitor the History Curriculum from Years 1 – 8.
  • Track pupil progress and report to the Senior Leadership Team.
  • Prepare and support pupils in scholarship applications to secondary schools.
  • Enter pupils in the annual Townsend Warner History Prize.
  • Control the department budget.
  • Collaborate with other departments and the Lower School.
  • Organize trips and lead them.
  • Undertake administrative duties related to the History Department.
  • Stay updated with educational developments and commit to personal and professional development.
  • May take on the role of a form tutor.

Essential Requirements:

  • Degree in History or an equivalent/applicable subject.
  • Teaching qualification.
  • Passion for teaching History.
  • Strong command of written and spoken English.
  • Strong digital literacy and ICT competency.
  • Experience of planning, implementing, and reflecting on whole Schemes of Work.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Present a clean Certificate of Good Conduct or International Child Protection Certificate (ICPC).
  • Adaptable, proactive, and willingness to give and receive constructive criticism.

Desirable (but not essential):

  • Experience of teaching the Common Entrance Specification.
  • Teaching experience abroad.
  • Previous Middle Leadership Experience and/or experience of being a Line Manager.
  • Experience leading professional development.
  • Experience of using iPads (or other tablets) and Virtual Learning platforms.
