Program Officer – Mental Health (11 positions)

Reporting to: Senior Technical Advisor – Mental Health
Location: Nakuru, Nairobi, Kisumu, Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Meru, Turkana, Mombasa, Kilifi, and Kwale

Job Purpose:
The Counseling Psychologist will provide high-quality counseling services to clients from diverse demographics, focusing on Gender and Sexual Diversities. The role involves conducting assessments, delivering inclusive therapy sessions, and implementing personalized treatment plans to address mental health concerns.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  1. Clinical Counseling:
    • Conduct various counseling sessions (individual, family, and group therapies) using diverse therapeutic approaches.
    • Establish a safe and supportive environment for clients to address challenges related to anxiety, depression, trauma, relationships, and other psychological issues.
  2. Assessment and Diagnosis:
    • Perform thorough psychological assessments using standardized tools to evaluate emotional, behavioral, and cognitive patterns.
    • Develop accurate diagnoses and personalized treatment plans based on in-depth interviews and observations.
  3. Treatment Planning:
    • Create detailed treatment plans in collaboration with clients, incorporating evidence-based practices and considering cultural nuances.
  4. Therapeutic Interventions:
    • Implement evidence-based interventions, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness techniques, to help clients overcome psychological challenges.
  5. Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain confidential records of client sessions, progress notes, and treatment plans according to regulatory standards and organizational policies.
  6. Collaboration and Consultation:
    • Collaborate with mental health professionals, including psychiatrists and social workers, providing consultation and insights.
  7. Community Outreach:
    • Organize workshops and outreach programs to increase mental health awareness and reduce stigma within the KP community.
  8. Continuous Professional Development:
    • Stay updated on the latest research and advancements in counseling psychology through ongoing training and professional development.
  9. Program Management:
    • Develop and implement models for mental health program delivery, providing technical guidance and support to program staff.
  10. Partnership and External Relations:
    • Build and maintain relationships with partners, KP organizations, government agencies, NGOs, and academic institutions.
  11. Knowledge Management and Learning:
    • Manage and maintain a collection of documents and resources on mental health for the project, sharing knowledge with program staff and partners.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Counseling/Psychology or Clinical Psychology.
  • Valid license to practice as a Counseling/Clinical Psychologist in Kenya.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in clinical counseling.
  • Experience and training in project management is an added advantage.

Competencies:

  • Proficiency in various therapeutic modalities and evidence-based interventions.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and cultural competence skills.
  • Awareness of cultural nuances and sensitivities of key and vulnerable populations.
  • Well-versed in the psychosocial aspects of HIV/AIDS, including prevention education and support for coping mechanisms.
  • Knowledge and experience in substance abuse treatment interventions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Commitment to ethical standards, confidentiality, and professional conduct.
