Are you interested in collaborating with NGOs, businesses, journalists, and legal teams to instigate fundamental change?

Join an organization that uniquely combines the strengths of journalism and legal expertise to cultivate more inclusive economies and advocate for human rights. The Thomson Reuters Foundation is in search of a Project Manager to become part of our Nairobi team, offering leadership in the management of the Strengthening Africa Media Resilience and Independence (SAMRI) project.

The SAMRI initiative is committed to fostering open, balanced information environments across Sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on enhancing the resilience, credibility, and editorial sustainability of media outlets in Kenya, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe.

We are actively seeking a highly motivated and organized Project Manager to lead the implementation of the SAMRI project based in Nairobi, Kenya. The chosen candidate will play a pivotal role in achieving project objectives, overseeing various aspects of the program, and ensuring its successful execution.

Please note that this is a 2-year fixed-term contract.

Role Overview:

As a Project Manager at Thomson Reuters Foundation, you will:

  • Plan and oversee the SAMRI project, ensuring adherence to scope, timeline, and budget within the organization’s project management framework.
  • Provide regular project updates, including financial, narrative, and impact reports to key stakeholders on a monthly and quarterly basis.
  • Collaborate with the Monitoring and Evaluation team to implement the project’s impact monitoring plan systematically.
  • Work closely with team members to drive project success, resolve conflicts, and secure stakeholder commitment.
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate risks that may impact project success.
  • Manage project finances, coordinating with Project Coordinators, partners, and the finance team.
  • Estimate project costs, resource requirements, and timescales for successful completion within scope and constraints.
  • Maintain project plans, tracking activities and progress against the plan.
  • Ensure project finances align with the foundation’s policies and audit requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Global Development Team and the Regional Programme Manager for Africa to identify strategic networking and business development opportunities.
  • Represent SAMRI in relevant networks, forums, and project consortia to enhance the project’s external profile.
  • Develop and implement an effective communication plan, including regular reporting and accurate updates.
  • Support the Business Development team in identifying funding opportunities through proposal development, activity design, and budget planning.

To be considered for the Project Manager role, you will likely have:

  • Experience working with international donors and familiarity with donor reporting requirements.
  • Proven success in managing multi-country, multi-partner projects in the international development context (5+ years).
  • Exceptional project and program management skills, including monitoring and evaluation.
  • Proficiency in budget and financial management.
  • Experience in remote program management, program start-up, mobilization, and closure.
  • Resilience and the ability to thrive in high-pressure environments, with a capacity to find solutions when challenges arise.
  • Strong ability to convey complex information to non-experts.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to build positive working relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with fluency in English. Knowledge of other languages, such as French and Swahili, is advantageous.
