Researcher (Food Systems)

Overview: The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is recruiting a Researcher for the Nutrition and Food Systems Unit within the Research Division, focusing on food systems research.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct research on food systems, including community-based, school-based, or desk-based research.
    • Conceptualize and design studies.
    • Manage and coordinate projects, overseeing fieldwork, data management, analysis, and report writing.
  2. Research linkages between climate change, food systems, and nutrition for informed food systems transformation and climate action.
  3. Develop and test strategies to inform policy and catalyze food systems transformation for enhanced food security and nutrition.
  4. Lead and contribute to proposal development and scientific writing.
  5. Supervise, mentor, and train junior research staff.
  6. Lead policy engagement, knowledge translation, and communication to relevant audiences.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  • PhD in Nutrition, Public Health, Food Systems, or related fields.
  • Strong writing skills and a record of publications in relevant areas in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Minimum six years’ post-doctoral experience in Food Systems research, including food production, distribution, value addition, consumption, and their relationship with nutrition and health.
  • Experience in developing proposals and attracting research grants, particularly in nutrition or food systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing research teams and partnerships.
  • Proven experience in conducting household surveys.
  • Strong quantitative skills, familiarity with statistical packages (STATA, SAS, or SPSS).
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft packages (MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel).
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, ability to work in a culturally diverse team.

Desirable:

  • Expertise/experience in maternal, infant, and young child nutrition, child nutrition, and adolescent nutrition.
  • Expertise in human-rights based approaches to food systems.
  • Training/experience in climate change, sustainable food systems, and linking climate change, food systems, and nutrition and health.
  • Expertise in qualitative methods, including familiarity with qualitative analysis software (e.g. NVivo).

Position Classification:

  • The successful candidate may be appointed at Research Scientist (6-11 years after PhD) or Senior Research Scientist (12+ years after PhD) levels depending on experience and track record.
  • Classified under Internationally Recruited Positions (IRP), Grades II to IV.
