Job Description

The Spray Assistant will work closely with the Spray Agronomist to support effective application of pesticides and other agricultural chemicals on the farm. This role requires a strong attention to detail, adherence to safety protocols, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. The Spray Assistant will assist in the preparation, calibration, and operation of spraying equipment, as well as record-keeping and data management related to spray activities.

Main Responsibilities

Assist the Spray Agronomist in planning and executing spray operations according to the farm’s pest management program.
Prepare and calibrate spraying equipment, ensuring accurate application rates and proper functioning of machinery.
Operate spraying equipment safely and efficiently, following established protocols and guidelines.
Monitor weather conditions and adjust spray schedules accordingly to optimize effectiveness and minimize environmental impact.
Maintain accurate records of spray activities, including chemical usage, application rates, and pivot and block locations.
Assist in the maintenance and repair of spraying equipment, ensuring proper functioning and safety compliance.
Collaborate with the Spray Agronomist and Crop Spray Scouts to identify and report any pest or disease issues observed during spray operations.
Follow all safety procedures and guidelines to protect personal health, the environment, and the farm’s assets.
Stay updated on industry trends, regulations, and best practices related to farm spraying techniques and general farm maintenance.
Support the farm operations and tasks as needed, including crop scouting, pivot and block inspections, and general farm maintenance.
Qualification, Experience, and Knowledge

Diploma in Agriculture or Horticulture.
Previous experience in farm spraying or related agricultural work is preferred.
Knowledge of pesticide application techniques, equipment operation, and safety protocols.
Familiarity with different types of crops and their specific pest management requirements.
Ability to follow instructions, work independently, and prioritize tasks in a dynamic work environment.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy in record-keeping and data management.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Physical endurance and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Job Description

The Crop Spray Scout at Mutara Orchards Limited will be responsible for inspecting crops on the farm to check for plant health, diseases, weeds, and pests to help the company make timely and informed decisions. This individual will ensure that top-quality grown products will always be made available to meet our customer’s demands.

Main Responsibilities

Planning

Plan the order of the fields to be monitored according to the developed schedule.

Monitoring and Surveying Pivots

Conduct daily or weekly pivot visits to assess crop health.
Identify and report on potential pests and diseases.
Collect data using photos and on forms.
Collect soil samples often and forward them to the Spray Agronomist.
Notify security of any crop theft or distraction.
Monitor the efficiency of products used for control measures.

Recording and Reporting

Collect and record data related to pests, diseases, and weed status in a given pivot.
Make recommendations based on field status.
Communicate any irregular field situation to the Line Manager.
Maintain up-to-date records and reports.

Quality Control

Ensure that the plant population is within the required threshold, seed is covered, and planting is within the right condition.
Ensure sprayer nozzles are dispensing the desired volumes and there is no blockage.
Ensure fertilizers are applied using the right rate & distribution.
Ensure there are minimal losses during harvesting.

Qualification, Experience, and Knowledge

Diploma in agriculture.
2-3 years of experience on a large-scale farm.
Knowledge of plant health on various vegetables will be advantageous.
Result-oriented, quality-oriented individual with a high level of integrity.
Able to collaborate with all teams at the farm.
Open to change and willing to learn new farming systems.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong organizational and time management skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

We are seeking a knowledgeable and experienced Avocado Agronomist to join our team. As an Avocado Agronomist, you will play a crucial role in studying and managing the cultivation of avocado trees. Your expertise and guidance will contribute to the success and productivity of the avocado farms, ensuring optimal growth and yield. This position requires a deep understanding of avocado farming practices, as well as a passion for sustainable agriculture and innovation.

Main Responsibilities

Conduct research and stay updated on the latest advancements in avocado cultivation techniques, pest and disease control, irrigation methods, and post-harvest handling.
Provide expert advice and guidance on soil preparation, planting techniques, fertilization, pruning, and other essential aspects of avocado cultivation.
Collaborate with the Avocado Production Manager to develop and implement effective pest and disease management strategies, including the use of integrated pest management (IPM) practices.
Monitor avocado orchards regularly to assess plant health, identify potential issues, and recommend appropriate remedial actions.
Conduct trials and experiments to optimize avocado production, improve fruit quality, and enhance overall farm efficiency.
Educate field supervisors on sustainable agricultural practices, water conservation methods, and environmentally friendly approaches to avocado farming.
Provide training to farm workers on best practices for avocado cultivation, including proper pruning techniques, irrigation management, and post-harvest handling.
Stay informed about market trends, consumer preferences, and industry regulations related to avocados, and provide insights to farmers on market opportunities and challenges.
Collect and record data related to pests, diseases, and weed status in a given pivot.
Make recommendations based on field status.

Qualification, Experience, and Knowledge

Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Science, or a related field with at least 2 years of relevant experience.
Proven experience as an Agronomist, preferably with a focus on avocado cultivation, with knowledge in grafting and nursery management.
In-depth knowledge of avocado farming practices, including soil management, planting techniques, irrigation systems, pest and disease control, and post-harvest handling.
Familiarity with sustainable agriculture practices and a commitment to environmental stewardship.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and address issues affecting avocado plant health and productivity.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with colleagues, farm workers, and industry stakeholders.

Vegetables Agronomist

Job description

The Vegetables Agronomist at Mutara Orchards Limited will be responsible for the production of all vegetables, observing Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), and Global GAP Standards. The Agronomist will examine, research, and solve problems related to crop management, output, and quality.

Main Responsibilities

Implementing agreed weekly planting programs for all vegetables.
Researching and promoting agricultural strategies to counter the effects of changes in soil, climate, and pest damage.
Ensuring the right plant population is attained at planting.
Maintaining high field hygiene standards through timely weed control and general sanitation.
Ensuring timely crop support, coiling, tucking, and stringing for supported crops.
Liaising with the Irrigation Manager to ensure proper scheduling of irrigation based on different crop requirements and stages of production, including the reduction of water wastage from leaks and over irrigation.
Liaising with the Spray Manager to ensure that pest control is well-managed and all pests and diseases are kept below threshold levels.
In charge of the vegetable’s nutrition through the implementation of fertilizer plans, compost/manure application, and foliar feeds.
Testing seed, plant, and soil samples collected for nutritional deficiencies, diseases, or other changes.
Acting as the link between the pack house and fields teams in terms of timely product supply, quantity, and quality issues.
Generating reports and presenting findings to management and colleagues.
Ensuring staff discipline and motivation in the department.
Participating in setting, reviewing, and monitoring the department’s work targets.
Optimizing labor numbers, ensuring employees hit their targets daily.

Qualification, Experience, and Knowledge

Bachelor of Science degree in agronomy, agriculture/horticulture, or a related field.
2-3 years of experience in agriculture/horticulture.
Knowledge of the vegetable industry.
Awareness of industry trends, technology, and developments.
Ability to work outside, stand, walk, kneel, and stoop for extended periods.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with colleagues.
Strong research, decision-making, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
