Vegetables Agronomist
- Department: Production
- Job Location: Laikipia County
- Reporting to: Production Manager
Job description
The Vegetables Agronomist at Mutara Orchards Limited will be responsible for the production of all vegetables, observing Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), and Global GAP Standards. The Agronomist will examine, research, and solve problems related to crop management, output, and quality.
Main Responsibilities
- Implementing agreed weekly planting programs for all vegetables.
- Researching and promoting agricultural strategies to counter the effects of changes in soil, climate, and pest damage.
- Ensuring the right plant population is attained at planting.
- Maintaining high field hygiene standards through timely weed control and general sanitation.
- Ensuring timely crop support, coiling, tucking, and stringing for supported crops.
- Liaising with the Irrigation Manager to ensure proper scheduling of irrigation based on different crop requirements and stages of production, including the reduction of water wastage from leaks and over irrigation.
- Liaising with the Spray Manager to ensure that pest control is well-managed and all pests and diseases are kept below threshold levels.
- In charge of the vegetable’s nutrition through the implementation of fertilizer plans, compost/manure application, and foliar feeds.
- Testing seed, plant, and soil samples collected for nutritional deficiencies, diseases, or other changes.
- Acting as the link between the pack house and fields teams in terms of timely product supply, quantity, and quality issues.
- Generating reports and presenting findings to management and colleagues.
- Ensuring staff discipline and motivation in the department.
- Participating in setting, reviewing, and monitoring the department’s work targets.
- Optimizing labor numbers, ensuring employees hit their targets daily.
Qualification, Experience, and Knowledge
- Bachelor of Science degree in agronomy, agriculture/horticulture, or a related field.
- 2-3 years of experience in agriculture/horticulture.
- Knowledge of the vegetable industry.
- Awareness of industry trends, technology, and developments.
- Ability to work outside, stand, walk, kneel, and stoop for extended periods.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with colleagues.
- Strong research, decision-making, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong organizational and time management skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
