University Counselor

University: Umma University

Location: Kenya

Umma University is seeking a qualified and experienced individual to fill the position of University Counselor. The purpose of this role is to offer counseling services to support and guide students.

Work Experience:

  • 3 years of professional counseling experience, preferably in an educational institution.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Offer both one-on-one and group counseling.
  2. Develop counseling programs to assist in career and academic development.
  3. Schedule client consultations.
  4. Maintain records and write reports.
  5. Assist students in processing their problems and planning goals & actions.
  6. Facilitate drug and alcohol prevention programs.
  7. Organize peer counseling programs.
  8. Carry out continuing personal and professional development to keep knowledge and skills up-to-date.
  9. Contribute to identifying behavioral and emotional patterns that may affect students’ mental health.
  10. Prepare summaries of the students counseled.
  11. Liaise with departmental HODs to improve learning.
  12. Implement counseling ethics and Policy, Procedures, and guidelines.
  13. Evaluate students’ abilities and interests through assessments and tools.
  14. Identify issues that affect school performance, such as poor classroom attendance.
  15. Appreciate diverse cultural and societal differences in dealing with students.
  16. Contribute to the strategic development of counseling initiatives in accordance with university policies.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Counseling or a Bachelor’s Degree in any of the Social Sciences with a Post-Graduate Diploma in counseling from a recognized institution.
  • Certificate in counseling supervision.
  • Certificate in training of trainers (Counselors).
  • Certificate in Trauma counseling and debriefing.
  • Membership in a relevant professional body in Kenya.
